Timeline

1821- Clara was born December 25, 1821 in Oxford Massachusetts

1852- Founded one of the first public schools, in Bordentown New Jersey.  Her school began with 6 students and then grew to 600 students

1854- She moved to Washington D.C. and took a job in a patent office, she was the first women to hold an independent clerkship

1862- Clara started distributing first aid supplies to hospitals, camps and battle fields and also began helping wounded soldiers

1864- She was honored with the title of The Super Superintendent of Union Nurses

1869- She talked about her experiences and had a physical break down and a doctor advised her to go to Europe to rest

1873- She returned to the U.S. after learning about the International Red Cross

1881- Clara established the American Red Cross Association

1897- She moved to Glen Echo and over sees Red Cross until she resigns in 1904

1912- She passed on April 12, 1912, Glen Echo Maryland, but she was buried near her birthplace in Massachusetts
