    Clara Barton was born on December 25, 1821 in oxford Massachusetts.  She lived with her mother,father,two older brothers, and two older sisters, who she learned a lot from. She was extremely shy which she soon overcomes. By the age of 4 she could spell three-syllable words and had already started school.(Clara Barton founder). In 1850 she was invited to attend the Liberal Institute in Clinton, New York. This school was for advanced women educators and was very expensive.  This inspires her to open her own school in New Jersey.  This was one of the first public schools, the students attending went from 6 to 600 since there was no high tuition to pay.(Clara Barton founder)When the school opened she thought that she would be at the head of the school, but the school board felt differently. They hired a man instead which upset Clara very much,so she left the school.(women in history)
    Clara moved to Washington D.C. and started working in a patent office.  she was the first women to hold an independent clerkship.  She was working in the patent office when the civil war started and wanted to help the soldiers.(women in history).  She began collecting first aid supplies to take to the wounded troops, she asked people of the public to donate any supplies they could. Clara had enough to fill 3 warehouses.  She trained volunteers to help her aid soldiers and transport supplies.  Clara went straight onto the battle with her wagon to the wounded troops to help them.(Clara Barton Founder)

    
    When the war ended Clara began to speak about her experiences from 1866 to 1868.  In 1869 she had a physical breakdown and her doctor advised her to got Europe to rest.  while she was in Switzerland she learned about the International Committee of the Red Cross.  This was an understanding to protect and aid the wounded and ill on a neutral bases.  When Clare returned to the United States she established the American National Red Cross.  For the first twenty years the Red Cross focused on disaster relief, such as hurricanes, forest fires, tidal waves, famine, and floods.(Clara Barton founder)  


    Clara was at the head of the organization till she resigned in 1904. she wrote books and talked about what she had seen and one through her life time.  she passed away on April 12, 1912 in Glen Echo, Maryland.  she was buried near her home in Oxford, Massachusetts.(Clara Barton founder)
